The museum is hosting a season dedicated to Frida Kahlo, including two exhibitions and a VR experience, from 4 May to 1 September 2024.

Singapore’s ArtScience Museum, located in Marina Bay Sands, is exploring the life of extraordinary Mexican artist and cultural icon Frida Kahlo through two exhibitions and a VR experience, collectively titled Frida Forever.

At the centre of Frida Forever is Frida Kahlo: The Life of an Icon, an immersive exhibition comprising a unique blend of 360-degree projections, multi-layer technology, interactive installations, and creative spaces that brings Kahlo’s drawings to life and recreates significant moments in her history across eight dynamic spaces.

Exquisite Corpse is a VR experience that allows visitors to enter Frida’s paintings. Starting from Kahlo’s bed, the experience extends beyond the walls of her room, blending computer-generated imagery, 360-degree filming, and special footage to immerse viewers in dreamlike landscapes and defining elements of Kahlo’s work.

Offering a different perspective to Frida’s story is Laid Bare: Frida’s Inner World—an exhibition curated by ArtScience Museum with the support of fashion curator Circe Henestrosa and Cristina Kahlo Alcalá, the great niece of Frida Kahlo.

The exhibition features close to 40 photographs, diary pages, contemporary artworks, and medical records. It includes exclusive interviews with Kahlo Alcalá about how she acquired these medical documents from the American British Cowdray Hospital in Mexico City, where Frida Kahlo spent long periods of time, and with medical experts from Singapore—from an orthopaedic surgeon to an anaesthetist—who provide contemporary analyses of the artist’s medical conditions.

Laid Bare offers a narrative that intertwines the fragility of the human condition with the resilience of the human spirit at the intersection of health, identity, and artistic expression.
