Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw (MSN Warsaw) will open the galleries of its first permanent location next February. The inauguration follows a three-week art festival the museum hosted last month.
Situated in Warsaw's historic Parade Square, the new 213,000-square-foot building now houses the public institution's collection comprising some 1,000 modern and contemporary artworks.
Beyond gallery space for long-term and temporary exhibitions, on-site facilities includes a 150-seat theatre, conservations studios, an auditorium, a bookshop, and a café.
'This project, which is 20 years in the making, gives the Polish capital its first permanent home for international contemporary art,' said MSN Warsaw Director, Joanna Mytkowska.
'Founded as a roving institution committed to the art of our time, MSN Warsaw now takes on a new role as a centre for conversations animating contemporary art of all kinds,' she added.
The museum today holds works by contemporary artists such as Magdalena Abakanowicz, Alina Szapocznikow, Monika Sosnowska, Cecilia Vicuña, Thomas Hirschhorn, and Wolfgang Tillmans.
New York architecture firm Thomas Phifer and Partners, who worked on the project, are also behind Glenstone Museum in Maryland; Corning Museum of Glass in New York; and North Carolina Museum of Art. —[O]
