ARARIO GALLERY SEOUL presents HWANG Sueyon’s (b. 1981) solo exhibition Magma from 29 February to 20 April 2024. This exhibition presents new works consisting of 3 sculptures and 10 2-dimensional sculptures. HWANG’s works are a reinterpretation of the physical performances related to social media short-form content, utilising one-minute videos that captivate the public by transforming everyday subjects—like the intricate fabrication processes of consumer goods or the tranquil daily existence of wildlife—into visually engaging narratives. HWANG undertakes a meticulous process of recreating images from these videos into tangible sculptures. In the actual process of creation, images are reinterpreted through her physical prowess and the tangible constraints of the real world. The exhibition highlights HWANG’s exploration of varied expressions and techniques, building on the themes of her previous works deeply ingrained with a fascination for the substance of materials and the performative nature of sculptural acts.********

About the Artist

Sueyon Hwang (b.1981) presents works that show her interest in the unique characteristics of various materials, while transforming and emphasizing their materiality. She received her BFA and MFA from School of Seoul National University of Science and Technology, Seoul. Hwang held her solo exhibitions at Doosan Gallery Seoul, Seoul in 2019, Kumho Museum of Art, Seoul in 2017 and etc. She has participated in group exhibitions such as Young Korean Artists 2019: Liquid Glass Sea(National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, Gwacheon, 2019), As Two Half Moons Meet (Brega Artist Space, Seoul, 2018), Things: Sculptural Practice (Doosan Gallery Seoul, Seoul, 2017), Gray Navy Black (Korean Cultural Center in Hong Kong, Hong Kong, 2018) Shared Isolation (Kumho Museum of Art, Seoul, 2013), Turning the Corner of Square(Gallery Palais de Seoul, Seoul, 2011) and more.

About the Gallery

ARARIO GALLERY SEOUL opened its doors in Sogyeok-dong in 2006. Since then, it has established its foothold as a leading contemporary art gallery in Korea and across Asia, continuing to be at the forefront of the international art scene through its efficient representation system and bold exhibitions. In March 2014, ARARIO GALLERY SEOUL relocated near the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. In April 2018, ARARIO GALLERY SEOUL RYSE HOTEL, a second exhibition space in Seoul, opened in the Hongdae area. Running concurrently with its primary location until November 2019, the project space aimed to mirror the experimental spirit of the neighbourhood through its innovative programming. In 2022, ARARIO GALLERY SEOUL ended its Sogyeok-dong era. However, the various experimentation and ventures carried out in the gallery’s previous spaces continue to shape its future at its current location in Wonseo-dong, which reopened in February 2023. Through the preemptive discovery of young artists, steady support of represented artists, and the realisation of meaningful and original exhibitions, ARARIO GALLERY SEOUL aims to continually grow and contribute to the growth of the contemporary art scene in Korea.
