Press Release

Ames Yavuz proudly presents Urban Rite, our debut solo exhibition with acclaimed artist Reko Rennie.

In Urban Rite, Rennie unveils a commanding new body of paintings that marks a fresh direction in his practice. Introducing figurative elements, these works foreground personal narratives and glimpses into Rennie’s day-to-day experiences, merged and remixed with iconography drawn from his Kamilaroi heritage. ‘Urban Rite’ offers an unapologetic exploration of Indigenous identity, sovereignty and presence within the urban landscape, with each canvas reclaiming and redefining space through Rennie’s signature bold, abstracted style. The exhibition coincides with his major survey at the National Gallery of Victoria.

About the Artist

Reko Rennie (b.1974, Naarm/Melbourne) is an interdisciplinary artist who explores his Aboriginal identity through contemporary media. Through his art, Rennie provokes discussion surrounding Indigenous culture in contemporary urban environments. Largely autobiographical, his commanding works combine the iconography of his Kamilaroi heritage, merging traditional diamond-shaped designs, hand-drawn symbols and repetitive patterning to subvert romantic ideologies of Aboriginal identity.
