CAMILLE HANNAH
Camille Hannah is the recipient of an Australian Postgraduate Scholarship Award and is currently undertaking a Masters of Fine Art by research at the Victorian College of the Arts. This year Hannahwas a finalist in the 2012 Wynne Prize. She is the recipient of numerous other awards including the Pleysier Perkins Acqusitive Art Prize 'Exploration 11' at Flinders Lane Gallery (winner) and a finalist in the Substation Contemporary Art Prize in 2011. In 2010 she received the Tania Brougham Award and the Myer Foundation Award, as well as the Fiona Myer Award (2010), Felicity and Stuart Carter Award (2010), the National Gallery Women's Association Undergraduate Encouragement Award (2009), and 'Proud', VCA Margaret Lawrence Gallery, Digital Artwork Prize. Camille Hannah's work is part of important corporate and public collections, including Artbank and the Crown Casino, Melbourne and in private collections throughout Australia.
In order to allow for a broad discussion about the possibilities of painting as an active participant with its own language, as well as ideas about what constitutes a spatial experience in relation to painting, Camille Hannah's paintings explore concepts pertaining to a Baroque vision, its connection to installational forms of painting and how this relates to the notion of an 'erotics' of painting.
A clear gesture or a deceptively simple surface aims to mask a tangle of intellectual and sensual side effects. Beyond this analytical frame is the fact that Camille Hannah's paintings hope to engage the viewer immediately in a tactile participation, a sensitised awareness of bodily presence and movement in space.
Hannah's work traverses the paradox between the prohibition of touch in relation to art – and the erotics of painting, through ideas of correlation and its relationship to the Baroque with an emphasis on notions of sensation and affect, whilst positioning her work within the visual language of 'the screen'.
