Thailand’s First Major Contemporary Art Museum to Open in December
A massive converted warehouse will house Dib Bangkok, a landmark institution showcasing Thai and international contemporary art. Save to My Ocula
Thailand’s first major museum dedicated to international contemporary art will open this December in a repurposed 1980s steel warehouse in downtown Bangkok.
Founded by the Osathanugrah family, Dib Bangkok’s collection contains over 1,000 works by more than 200 artists from around the world, spanning a diverse range of media, with the majority dating from the 1990s to the present.
The warehouse has been redesigned by Kulapat Yantrasast of WHY Architecture—also the firm selected last year to lead a major museographic overhaul at the Musée du Louvre.
Nestled in the Rama IV area, the museum features a minimal yet nuanced three-storey design, topped with its distinctive sawtooth roof. Architectural highlights include a cone-shaped gallery named ‘The Chapel’ and a 15,000-square-foot central courtyard.
The museum’s inaugural director, Dr Miwako Tezuka, comes from leadership roles at New York‘s Japan Society, Asia Society Museum, and the Reversible Destiny Foundation. Ariana Chaivaranon will serve as curator.
The inaugural exhibition programme will honour the artistic vision of the late Petch Osathanugrah, showcasing works by Montien Boonma, Lee Bul, Anselm Kiefer, Alicja Kwade, and others under the theme of ‘invisible presence’. —[O]
