Specifically, Zhou Yilun will present his solo project Shelter at theKabinett sector in our booth, which is a site-specific installation thatincorporates paintings, found objects, handmade furniture, andsculptures. The space is precariously structured by arrays of paintingson three sides and canopied by a flimsy canvas. The paintings ondisplay exemplify his signature parodies that appropriate popularculture images at his fingertips, as well as his unique interaction withsymbols and images incursive into every aspect of contemporary life:with mottled paint, blurred figures, central compositions, Zhou’sdestruction of superfluous things—whether images or objects—hints ata new “redundancy.” The self-reflection of artwork and artmakingdisrupts the order between the viewer and the works. With sculpturalfurniture made of salvaged materials in the middle of the room, theartist builds a seemingly habitable space yet on the brink ofdestruction. Through coalescing the gallery room and shelter, Zhoureexamines the redundant and the temporal and embraces theuncertainty that ferments.
