A co-founder of the Memphis group alongside Ettore Sottsass in 1981, Martine Bedin is a major figure in contemporary design. Her work, driven by an experimental approach and a playful, colourful aesthetic, explores the relationships between form, material, and function. For a long time, her design practice overshadowed her artistic work, which has only been exhibited for the past three years. As an artist, she plays with pure, simple volumes and vibrant colours, applying her motifs to a wide range of domestic surfaces. Her research questions the function of objects and their poetic and emotional significance, fostering a continuous dialogue between art and design, object and space.
For her second solo exhibition at the gallery, Martine Bedin unveils a new series of pain- tings—watercolours on linen paper—stemming from a pictorial reflection on objects in space, drawing from everyday items: colander, cup, glass, tart mould.
Martine Bedin was born in Bordeaux and lives and works in Paris. Her first retrospective solo exhibition was held in 2003 at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs de Bordeaux, and her most recent solo shows have been presented at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs de Paris, Sèvres - Manufacture et Musée nationaux, Sèvres (FR), Crèvecœur, Paris (FR), and Roberto Giustini Gallery, Rome (IT). She has participated in group exhibitions at the Centre Pom- pidou, Paris (FR), Pavillon des Arts, Geneva (CH), CAPC, Bordeaux (FR), La Maison Fabre, Toulouse (FR), and the Milan Triennale (IT).
Her works are part of major institutional collections, including the Centre Pompidou, Paris (FR); Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris (FR); Musée des Arts Décoratifs et du Design, Bordeaux (FR); Frac Nouvelle-Aquitaine MÉCA (FR); M+ Museum of Visual Culture, Hong Kong (HK); The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (US); Victoria and Albert Mu- seum, London (UK); and Nasjonalmuseet, Oslo (NO).
