In January 2019 Karsten Schubert London launched its new exhibition space Room 2. The gallery’s unconventional setting – an apartment in a mid-eighteenth-century terraced house – provides a platform for invited artists to exhibit work in a domestic space. The programme focuses on close collaboration with artists to create thoughtful, select exhibitions. Karsten Schubert London also co-organises exhibitions with partner galleries and museums and participates in international art and book fairs.
Ridinghouse, the gallery’s publications arm, is internationally recognised for its dedication to publishing the best of art writing and criticism, revisiting art history and exploring individual artists and specific projects through its ever-expanding list. Ridinghouse was founded in 1995 by Karsten Schubert with Thomas Dane and Charles Asprey. Recent titles include Reconstructing Cezanne: Sequence and Process in Paul Cezanne’s Works on Paper, Cecily Brown: Shipwreck Drawings and The Outwardness of Art: Selected Writings of Adrian Stokes.
Throughout its esteemed 30-year history the gallery has championed contemporary artists from across the globe, with a special focus on artists from the UK. Notable exhibited artists include Carl Andre, Glenn Brown, Mat Collishaw, Keith Coventry, Michael Craig-Martin, Dexter Dalwood, Dan Flavin, Anya Gallaccio, Gary Hume, Tess Jaray, Michael Landy, Bob Law, Gerhard Richter, Bridget Riley, Ed Ruscha, John Stezaker, Rachel Whiteread, Alison Wilding and Fred Wilson.
Karsten Schubert, the company's founder, was born in Berlin in 1961 and died in London in 2019. As well as heading the gallery and the publishing house, he sat on the Advisory Board of Drawing Room, London, and was a member of the Faculty of the Fine Arts at The British School at Rome. His books include Bridget Riley: Complete Prints, 1962–2012 (ed., 2012) and The Curator’s Egg: The Evolution of the Museum Concept from the French Revolution to the Present (2000).
Today the gallery continues under the leadership of Managing Director Tom Rowland, whose team includes Kostas Synodis, Director of Operations, and Caroline Manganaro, Exhibitions Director. Sophie Kullmann heads Ridinghouse as Publisher.
