Hannah Ann Joynt Biography

Since graduating a Bachelor of Fine Art (painting major) from Otago Polytechnic 2006, Joynt has had solo exhibitions at Center of Contemporary Art in Christchurch, An Alien Snuck Into Class and No One Noticed (2009) and Never Trust Your Cape (2010), The Temple Gallery Dunedin, Grieving Over a Dead Fish; Secret Mens Business (2011) and Come Together at None Gallery, Dunedin (2009).

She regularly participates in group shows both locally and nationally. An Edinburgh Realty Art Award Winner 2010 with work The Backyard Warriors and in 2009 she was also winner of the COCA Anthony Harper Award for Contemporary Art, with the work Place Getters in a Long Distance Race of which the judge Hamish Keith said the work “took me to an entirely new and unfamiliar place”.

In 2013 she undertook the project ‘Te Araroa Drawing Expedition’ in which she walked and drew her way 3,000km down the length of New Zealand following the Te Araroa Trail. The 150 drawings made on the journey are to be exhibited in 2014. Joynt is currently represented by the Artist Room Gallery in Dunedin, and has an upcoming exhibition in February. Joynt also works part time teaching life drawing, painting, and illustration in the School of Design, Otago Polytechnic.

“Painting is a lens through which I view the world, a form of dialogue that is a response to my experiences. My relationship with paint is an on going and infinitive journey, one that never seems to tire.”
