Global gallery Pace and Zurich-founded Galerie Judin have announced the launch of their new shared gallery, set in a revamped 1950s gas station. The site will host two exhibitions each year by Pace and three by Galerie Judin, who acquired the building in 2007.
‘We look back on a longstanding collaboration and friendship with Pace and the Glimcher family,’ said Juerg Judin, founder of Galerie Judin. He added that both galleries share ‘a non-territorial and collegial attitude towards the art market’.
Pace will move its Berlin office, which it opened in 2023, to the new location in April. In addition to sharing space, both galleries represent Romanian painter Adrian Ghenie, who is based in the German capital alongside Pace artists like Alicja Kwade and Elmgreen & Dragset.
‘Pace has a deep commitment to Berlin and its thriving creative community, and we feel so honoured to bring our artists’ work to this very special building in the city,’ said Laura Attanasio, senior director at Pace Gallery and head of its Berlin operations.
Attanasio told Artnews that Germany’s VAT reduction from 19 to 7 percent contributed to the gallery’s decision to expand to the city. Dealers will be subjected to the new rate as of this January, reversing the 2014 tax hikes that gutted the German art market.
Despite Berlin’s reputation as an international art capital, Germany occupied a meagre two percent of the global art market as of 2023. Last December, the city’s government cut its culture budget by 130 million EUR (around 130 million USD), or 12 percent, threatening non-commercial initiatives.
Pace currently has eight locations, including in New York, Los Angeles, Seoul, Hong Kong, and Beijing. Since expanding to Berlin in 2023, the gallery has organised exhibitions by Maysha Mohamedi and Qiu Xiaofei.
The inaugural exhibition will be co-organised by Pace and Galerie Judin during Gallery Weekend Berlin (2–4 May 2025). More details will be announced closer to the opening. —[O]
