Pierre Huyghe: The Artist as Director Ocula Conversation Pierre Huyghe: The Artist as Director

Pierre Huyghe is a producer of spectacular and memorable enigmas, with works that function more like mirages than as objects. Abyssal Plain (2015–ongoing), his contribution to the 2015 Istanbul Biennial, curated by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, was installed on the seabed of the Marmara Sea, some 20 metres below the surface of the water and close to...

In the early decades of its existence, New York's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), founded in 1929, transformed from a philanthropic project modestly housed in a few rooms of the Heckscher Building on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street, to an alleged operating node in the United States' cultural struggle during the cold war, and one of the...

John Reynolds

b. 1956, New Zealand

Contemporary New Zealand artist John Reynolds graduated from the University of Auckland School of Fine Arts in 1980. Until the mid-1990s, his oil stick/acrylic painting seemed to share much in common with Abstract Expressionism, but his search for ultimate ‘truths’ in Reynolds’ work remained playful and speculative. Responding to the abundance of information in the global community in the 21st century, Reynolds sifted through the values and beliefs of numerous cultures and periods in history. Drawing together Greek mythology, Nietzschean philosophy and Herman Melville in a single body of work for example, he suggested that any notion of certainty is questionable.

Most recently, he has worked with small canvases with colloquial phrases written with oil sticks. The installation, Clouds (2006), consisted of 7081 canvases with words from the Dictionary of New Zealand English, alluding to a country’s identity shaped by complex, random beliefs, thoughts and values. Reynolds has work in the collection of the Auckland Art Gallery and Te Papa Tongarewa - The Museum of New Zealand.
