Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and artist Daniel Arsham yesterday co-posted an image of Priscilla Chan drinking from a turquoise travel mug beside a newly created statue of her in a similar hue.
Chan is sculpted walking forwards as a chrome sheet billows around her.
The combination of what appears to be oxidised copper and polished stainless steel is typical of Arsham, who likes to juxtapose ancient and contemporary subjects and materials.
Speaking to Ocula last year, Arsham said, ‘I have always been fascinated with objects and what they say about the world they exist in, from Greek antiquity to a CD player.’
‘Usually, the erosion and formations that I am creating would take thousands of years to appear, but through form and sculpture we can be projected into the future, and question what these pieces say about our world and the lives we live,’ he said.
On the Instagram post, @zuck captioned the image ‘Bringing back the Roman tradition of making sculptures of your wife.’
People magazine said Zuckerberg’s gesture made him ‘the ultimate wife-guy’.
‘Wife-guy’ is a term used to describe men whose public declarations of love for their wives are exaggerated, and potentially self-serving.
Zuckerberg’s post also recalled last year’s TikTok trend of women asking their male partners how often they think about the Roman Empire. In keeping with the joke, for Zuckerberg the answer seems to be often. —[O]
