The dynamic Shanghai gallery BANK is set to launch a pilot programme in New York this month. Located at 127 Elizabeth Street, Nolita, BANK NYC will open with a solo exhibition by L.A.-based artist Patty Chang and a group show curated by Yuan Fuca.
Founder Mathieu Borysevicz described the temporary expansion to Ocula as a ‘gallery residency’, emphasising that the New York space is ‘not only developing markets and recognition for artists from China and the Asian diaspora’, but also ‘keep[ing] channels open’.
BANK’s programme features contemporary artists including Michael Lin and Chen Tianzhuo, as well as historical figures like Song Huai-Kuei.
Chang’s exhibition will include recent multidisciplinary works, with a focus on her video essay We Are All Mothers (2022). Concurrently, the group show Braided Stream (20 March–28 April 2025) curated by Yuan Fuca will present works by ten artists including Carolina Caycedo, Timur Si-Qin, and Alice Wang.
BANK was founded in 2013 as a curatorial studio by Borysevicz, who has been active in the Chinese art scene since the 1990s. The original Shanghai gallery was set in a 1920s bank in the Bund area, before it moved to the former French Concession at Anfu Lu. It is now relocating to a historic complex centred around a 1928 László Hudec-designed mansion, where it will open a solo show of Shanghai-based artist Lin Ke on 22 March. —[O]
