Chan + Hori Contemporary is pleased to present Pre-Heaven, an exhibition of new works by Ruben Pang. Widely regarded as one of the leading contemporary local painters to-date, Ruben is an emblematic figure for younger generations of artists. In 2019 alone, he exhibited internationally in Hong Kong, France, Thailand and Italy. His sixth solo exhibition with the gallery and first major Singaporean showcase since 2017, this exhibition commemorates a decade of professional practice.
Ruben Pang's new works draw inspiration from a variety of sources including folklore, paganism and Taoism. These paintings and sculptures are sequences of Jungian archetypes, forgotten or imaginary deities, both coming into being and falling apart. Pre-Heaven reflects on the difficulty of expressing an inner vision and various opposing forces to exercising individual will. The title alludes to the sweet spot before each oscillation of alleviation and dissatisfaction of each encounter with oneself.
