Carlos Basualdo to Guide Nasher Sculpture Center Into New Chapter as Director

Carlos Basualdo says it’s a ‘great honour’ to lead an institution he has long admired, as the Argentine curator steps into the role of director at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas.

Succeeding longtime director Jeremy Strick from May, Basualdo will bring over two decades of experience as curator and institutional leader to the specialised museum dedicated to modern and contemporary sculpture.

Most recently, he was organising award-winning exhibitions, securing major endowments, and leading a team of approximately 140 at the Philadelphia Museum of Art (2005–2024).

David Haemisegger, Chair of the Nasher Board of Trustees, was thrilled to welcome him, saying ‘his distinguished career and curatorial achievements align perfectly with our mission to champion the field of sculpture’.

Jed Morse, Interim Director and Chief Curator at Nasher Sculpture Center, said Basualdo brings ‘a singular combination of scholarly rigour, global vision, and deep respect for artists’.

‘His experience working at the intersection of curatorial innovation and institutional leadership makes him uniquely suited to guide the Nasher into its next chapter,’ Morse said.

Basualdo praised the gallery for ‘its dedication to sculpture and its exceptional programme’.

‘I look forward to working with the team in Dallas to build on its remarkable legacy,’ he said.

Basualdo has also curated landmark exhibitions like Bruce Nauman: Topological Gardens at the U.S. Pavilion at the 2009 Venice Biennale, which received a Golden Lion for Best National Participation, and was on the team of Okwui Enwezor’s famed documenta 11 (2002).

At Philadelphia Museum of Art, he oversaw major endowments like Keith L. and Katherine Sachs Collection, comprising 97 works by artists like Jasper Jones, Louise Bourgeois, and Ellsworth Kelly, and the acquisition of new media works by Anri Sala, Fikret Atay, among others.

Established in 2003 by the late collector Raymond Nasher in downtown Dallas, Nasher Sculpture Center is home to more than 500 masterpieces by artists like Constantin Brâncuși, Auguste Rodin, Barbara Hepworth, Alexander Calder, Richard Serra, and more. —[O]
