The project in collaboration with the curator of the Solo section Sean O'Toole will showcase a selection of new works by South African artist Jeanne Gaigher.
Jeanne Gaigher usually works on textile materials. She can turn a physical medium into an expressive tool, adapting the canvases and scrims to the subjects depicted, and thus conveying universal messages. She defines such practice as "the anatomy of the canvas".
A deep photographic study of subjects emerges in her paintings, which flows into a dreamlike rendering where drawing takes the lead.
Gaigher draws from a broad range of references – foreign and local - but consistently connects the spacial element with her presence in it. Thus a distant, mesmerizing outer world becomes intimately her own. She is interested in the fluidity of subject matter, and how, through the act of painting, she can expand an object's meaning.
