Frieze Seoul’s fourth edition hopes to reinforce the Korean city’s status as a rising global art market destination as it features over 120 galleries from more than 30 countries, including 20 first-time exhibitors.
The fair has revealed initial details for this year as it runs alongside fellow South Korean art event Kiaf Seoul between 3 and 6 September at COEX, an enormous convention centre in Gangnam.
Frieze Seoul director Patrick Lee emphasised the event’s role in connecting Korean and international audiences.
‘The fair has quickly become an essential meeting point for Korean and international audiences, and this year’s programme promises to further deepen those exchanges—not only within COEX but across the entire city,’ he said.
This year’s fair will highlight galleries across Asia, with a strong focus on Korean spaces and newcomers like Hong Kong’s de Sarthe and 10 Chancery Lane Gallery, Make Room from Los Angeles, and Leo Gallery in Shanghai.
The main section will showcase over 80 exhibitors—from reputed mega-galleries like Gagosian, Hauser & Wirth, White Cube, and David Zwirner to important regional galleries like Antenna Space (Shanghai), STPI (Singapore), and Take Ninagawa (Tokyo) and local mainstays like Kukje Gallery, Gallery Baton, and PKM Gallery.
Returning sectors include Frieze Masters and Focus Asia—emerging talent exhibiting with young galleries in its third edition. This year, ten galleries will partake, including PTT Space (Taipei) with work by Californian meme painter Christine Tien Wang, CON_ Gallery (Tokyo) featuring kinetic sculptor Taiki Yokote, and Linseed (Shanghai), spotlighting painter Liang Fu.
Frieze’s executive director of fairs Kristell Chadé spoke of Seoul’s importance to the branded fair’s Asian strategy, which saw a new partnership develop this year with concurrent fair Kiaf Seoul, bringing 20 Korean galleries to their umbrella fair EXPO Chicago.
‘Frieze Seoul is the cornerstone of our presence in Asia—a fair that defines our ambitions in the region and plays a vital role in the wider Frieze calendar,’ she said.
Frieze Week will extend the event citywide, with gallery openings and exhibitions. Highlights include Louise Bourgeois at Ho Am Art Museum, Lee Bul at Leeum Museum of Art, Adrián Villar Rojas at Art Sonje Center, and the Media City Biennale at Seoul Museum of Art. —[O]
