The pictorial work of Etel Adnan has recently been exhibited in museum and arts centres around the world (UNAM Mexico; Flag Art Foundation, New York; Oakville Galleries, Canada; Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris; Serpentine, London; IMMA, Dublin; Museum der Moderne de Salzburg; Haus Konstruktiv, Zurich, etc.) and has already been the subject of two exhibitions by Galerie Lelong & Co. in Paris and New York.
Today, the gallery is showcasing her woven work. Large colourful tapestries with sensitive lines, a joint collaboration between the artist and the Pinton studio, will decorate the walls of the gallery until 10 March 2018. Produced in wool on a basse-lisse loom between 2015 and 2017 from designs made by the artist in the 1960s 1970s, but also from new sketches made during the year, these works are the fruit of an “art of collaboration that makes it even more endearing,” as the artist wrote in her book “Life is a weaving” published in 2016.
In parallel, the library will be exhibiting a group of prints recently edited by Lelong Editions. These are mainly etchings presenting more or less abstract landscapes, the titles of which are an invitation to travel: To the Ocean, Le feu du désert, Californie, Vue sur la mer, Guatemala... Their simple shapes and bright colours are directly related to the artist’s painted output.
Etel Adnan was born on February 24, 1925 in Beirut. Lebanese American artist and writer, she presently lives and works in Paris. Since the 1960s, Etel Adnan has been making accordion-fold books, or leporellos, that meld visual and verbal observation, fusing the artist’s parallel practices in painting and writing as she transcribes poems and records unfolding landscapes and urban spaces.
