ESLITE GALLERY is pleased to present a group exhibition of Ton Fan Art Group and Fifth Moon Group HSIA Yan and His Times from 4–26 August 2018, featuring nearly thirty works primarily made between the end of the 1940s and the 2000s by Hsia Yan, Hsiao Chin, Ho Kan, Wu Hao, Tommy Cheng, Han Hsiang Ning and Fu-Sheng Ku.
Taiwan entered a period of martial law that tightly gripped its people after leaving the 1940s behind, but amidst this repressive atmosphere, art flourished as young and eager minds absorbed an influx of European and American ideas and cultures. Some of these artists formed two art societies, Ton Fan Art Group and Fifth Moon Group, that became emblems of the modern art movement in Taiwan. In the years that followed, many travelled abroad to France, Italy, Spain and the United States to further explore their individual artistic languages and concepts on fertile grounds in the free West. More than six decades passed, they have grown from riders of waves to senior artists well respected by their young peers. In this exhibition, ESLITE re-examines the works they made between the 1950s and the 2000s. Notably, viewers can indulge in a number of works by Hsia Yan, including his photorealist paintings made in New York in the 1980s and first sculptures from the 1990s.
