Press Release

For her next exhibition at Galerie Lelong & Co., Fabienne Verdier will be showing her recent work in the entire space at 13 rue de Téhéran and in the newly expanded space (opening in September) at 38 avenue Matignon. This exhibition brings together a group of 16 altarpieces (retables) and 5 large-format ‘walking paintings’ and new silkscreen prints (rue de Téhéran).

In 2022, Fabienne Verdier presented a major exhibition at the Musée Unterlinden in Colmar, based entirely on the luminous halo surrounding the body of Christ on a wing of the Isenheim Altarpiece, Mathias Grünewald’s masterpiece and the museum’s crowning treasure.

Was it the artist’s long association with this altarpiece that led her to adopt this form? A central panel flanked by two smaller, movable panels. In any case, the effect is striking, as it reinforces the presence and intensity of the signs that the artist traces on these panels. The unusual shape of the frame for these paintings invites us to enter the image physically. The painting embraces us. Skilfully playing with contrasting colours, Verdier distils from these panels a kind of personal anthology of her favourite artistic gestures. Against a lively, vibrant backdrop, her vigorous brushstrokes re-enact a drama every time; even if it’s a happy one, it’s still a drama. A simple gesture, intensely meditated, releases an energy that materialises before our eyes and, through the silent power of paint, becomes almost tactile.

Fabienne Verdier was born in Paris in 1962. She lives and works in the Vexin, near Paris. In 2019, the Musée Granet in Aix-en-Provence devoted a retrospective exhibition to her, retracing her career since her return from China.

Her work features in numerous collections, including the MNAM Centre Pompidou (Paris), the Musée Granet (Aix-en-Provence), the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen (Munich), the Nasjonalmuseet (Oslo), the Kunsthaus (Zurich) and the Fondation Hubert Looser (Zurich). Several major exhibitions devoted to her have been held recently: ‘La mouvance de la matière’ at Château Lynch-Bages, ‘Le chant des étoiles’ at the Musée Unterlinden in Colmar and ‘Im Auge des Kosmos’ at the Saarland Museum in Germany.

About the Gallery
Galerie Lelong is located in Paris and New York. It was founded by Jacques Dupin, Daniel Lelong and Jean Frémon.

The Paris gallery has been exhibiting recent works from artists of international standing since 1981. The 1980s were notable for artists who went on to become household names, including Joan Miró, Antoni Tàpies, Francis Bacon, Louise Bourgeois, Eduardo Chillida, Paul Rebeyrolle, Pierre Alechinsky, but also for the next generation of artists: Konrad Klapheck, Jan Dibbets, Donald Judd, Robert Ryman, Richard Serra, Jannis Kounellis, Arnulf Rainer, Nicola De Maria and Jan Voss.

In the 1990s, the gallery hosted artists who represented major movements in contemporary art: Sean Scully, Günther Förg, Andy Goldsworthy, Ernest Pignon-Ernest, Antonio Saura. The gallery also increased international recognition of the work of Ana Mendieta.

Since the turn of the century, Galerie Lelong has accentuated the geographical and expressive diversity of its artists: from sculpture and objects by Jaume Plensa, David Nash, Wolfgang Laib, Kiki Smith, Rebecca Horn, Barry Flanagan to installations by Barthélémy Toguo and Lin Tianmiao, without forgetting painting, namely David Hockney, Robert Motherwell, Kate Shepherd, Nalini Malani, Nancy Spero, Juan Uslé, Leon Kossoff.

Galerie Lelong has a large publishing department which produces and distributes engravings, lithographs, digital prints and multiple objects, and collates these works in catalogues raisonnés.

It produces monumental sculptures to order for public spaces and private clients.

The gallery is present at the leading international contemporary art fairs (Art Basel, Art Basel Miami Beach, Art Basel Hong Kong, Fiac Paris, Frieze London, Frieze New York, Arco Madrid, Art Brussels, Expo Chicago...).

The directors of the gallery are Jean Frémon, Daniel Lelong and Patrice Cotensin in Paris and Mary Sabbatino in New York.
