The Chinese transliteration for magician – 'mó jīn shí' has the meaning of sharpening and refining, suggests a kind of reflection and introspection, while the English word 'magician' itself means something fantastical and unpredictable, implying further possibilities.
Magician Space was established in Beijing China in 2008. Since then, we have been actively engaging the Chinese contemporary art scene, while examining from our own standpoint and context. Through practice and evaluation, we aim to capture and address the blind spots in the current development of contemporary art in China.
Practitioners with serious attitudes and the will to take risks in their works are invited to collaborate with Magician Space. Through intensive conversations and understanding of the artist/group’s practice and intentions, we would make necessary changes to the space accordingly, in a way which the space is used to its fullest potential, even if that means certain barriers are to be broken.
Magician Space is a vanguard and an open platform. We strive to break the traditional barrier of an institution in order to build a space with more possibilities and flexibility. At the same time, we also actively engage with the public, providing them with an entry point through which they could observe, get closer to and participate in contemporary art.
We strive to become a cross point between the ideal and reality, a space with a clear and firm standpoint.
