Venice Biennale 2022 to Reframe Art History as a Story of ‘Symbiosis, Solidarity, and Sisterhood’
The event's main exhibition will explore the representation of bodies and their connections with technologies and the Earth.

All 213 artists participating in the Venice Biennale's main exhibition were named in a press conference yesterday. The exhibition, entitled The Milk of Dreams, opens at the Giardini and the Arsenale from Saturday 23 April to Sunday 27 November.
The curator of the exhibition, Cecilia Alemani, said her 'wide-ranging, transhistorical approach traces kinships and affinities between artistic methods and practices, even across generations, to create new layers of meaning and bridge present and past.'
'What emerges is a historical narrative that is not built around systems of direct inheritance or conflict, but around forms of symbiosis, solidarity, and sisterhood,' she said.
The vast majority of participating artists are women. They include Nan Goldin, Barbara Kruger, Christina Quarles, Jadé Fadojutimi, and Monira Al Qadiri.
Nearly half are deceased, including Surrealist Leonora Carrington, whose book title lends the exhibition its name, French Futurist Valentine de Saint-Point, Harlem Renaissance artist Meta Vaux Warrick Fuller, and actress Josephine Baker.
'The presence of a large number of female and gender non-conforming artists challenge the figure of men as the centre of the universe,' Alemani said.
In addition to the international exhibition, 80 countries will participate in the biennale through national pavilions at the Giardini, the Arsenale, and in the city centre.
